The Buffalo Regals Hockey Club was founded in 1957. Currently in their 55st year as a youth hockey organization, the Regals are the largest and oldest hockey club in Western New York. The Buffalo Regals total player enrollment is twice that of the next largest hockey club in the area. The organization fields AAA, AA and house level teams at all age levels from Beginners through Midget Major. In addition, the Regals also have a very successful girl’s hockey program.
The Midget Selects program was founded in 1997 and played from 1998-2006 as the Buffalo Saints. Following the 2006 season, the directors of the Midget Selects program decided to change affiliation and the program aligned with the Buffalo Regals Hockey Club. The relationship with the Buffalo Regals has been hugely successful and the Midget Selects program now enjoys the support and backing of the largest youth hockey organization in Western New York.
Over the past 15 seasons, the Midget Selects Program has enjoyed numerous successes. The main focus of the Selects Program has and will continue to be developing players to advance to higher levels of hockey. There have been over 100 former players that have successfully moved to Prep, Junior, College and Professional hockey. Currently, there are 11 alumni who have been drafted and/or played in the National Hockey League.
Our 18U program has won the 18U New York State Tier I Championship, which is the highest level of youth hockey in the state, the past 15 seasons in a row and has posted an incredible record of 155-2-1 in Sectional and State tournament games. This success has resulted in the 18U team representing New York State at the USA Hockey Tier I National Championships the past 15 seasons in a row. The 18U team has advanced to the USA Hockey 18U Tier I National Quarterfinals 9 times and has reached the National Semifinals 2 times.
In 2008, the 18U team transitioned from a pre/post team (stopping for the highschool season), to a full season program. The transition was a great success. In April of 2009, the team was accepted into the Tier I Elite League and successfully made the transition into the best youth hockey league in the United States during the 2009-2010 season. The 18U team has finished 1st in their Division the past 2 season and is a perennial power in the Tier I Elite League.
Since 1997, our 16U program has won the New York State 16U Tier I Championship on 2 occasions. In 2004, the 16U team won the programs only USA Hockey National Championship defeating a powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary's team in the final.
The 16U team was traditionally been a pre/post team, however beginning with the 2009-2010 season the 16U team also became a full season program. Now, the team competes in the16U division of the Tier I Elite League as had already had 2 strong seasons in league play.
In 2011, the Regals Midget program signed an affiliation agreement with the Buffalo Jr Sabres and the Buffalo Sabres Foundation. The 18U and 16U teams began to wear the Buffalo Sabres uniforms and work much more closely with the Buffalo Jr Sabres Jr. A program, coached by former Sabre Michael Peca. This has been a wonderful alliance for all 3 teams.
Our 15U team is a full season team, whose focus is on skill development. While some players still elect to participate in their highschool programs as well, the team is transitioning away fromt his practice. The team has traditionally competed in both 15U and 16U tournaments in both Canada and the United States. However, with the Regals induction into the SCTA, most of the 15U schedule will now be played in Canada against the top 15U teams in Ontario.
